Today is a big day in my beloved México. And it is not because 2/3 of the population woke up hungover. On this day 206 years ago, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla gave what has come to be known as El Grito de Dolores, the declaration of independence of Mexico from Spain.
Yep. Sorry to break it to you this way but May 5th is not Mexico’s Independence Day, today is the real Mexican Independence Day. While the celebration usually starts the evening of the 15th, it’s not to late to pour yourself a shot of tequila and join the festivities!
📸:Pictured above is the statue of Hidalgo y Costilla that now stands in the plaza in middle of the small town of Dolores, Guanajuato in front of the church where the Cry of Dolores was given. I took this picture in September 2012 when I visited Dolores with family. One of my favorite places.
